Summer 2016 Rock’N’Roll Recap

We give you the highlights of the music released from June to August in the L.A. scene.

JUNE 2016

Nico YaryanWhat A Tease – June 3rd

This dude is blowing up right now! The grooves, and that sick fuzz… I guess you could call it Stoner Soul?

Name the Band – Summer Lush – June 23rd

TV Heads – Total Fucker – June 24th

This is a solid group of seasoned musicians in a refreshing new L.A. band!

The Dead Ships – Citycide – June 24th

Most of Dorothy’s songs are going to sound familiar, because for the last two years they’ve been featured in all sorts of commercials. Their debut LP was just put out by Roc Nation Records. The production is interesting. You’ll notice the guitars sit far back in the mix and you don’t even miss them.

JULY 2016

Blink 182 – California – July 1st

I know Blink was originally from San Diego, but they all live up here now.

Modern ColorCROMESTHESIA – July 29th

This is one of those bands to keep an eye on, they got some great dynamics. Their songs go through a graceful balancing act between melodic shoegaze and aggressive post-hardcore. Open Door Records just released their debut full length. I think these guys have an interesting future ahead of them.

Wyatt Blair  Point of No Return – August 5th

Are you ever kept awake at night worrying about the future of REAL music? Once you hear Wyatt Blair, you’ll be able to rest easy. As long as Mr. Blair is out there melting faces with his 80’s style tunes, Rock’n’Roll will be just fine.

Dear Boy – Parts of a Flower EP – August 5th

Everyone’s got a big ol’ hard on for these guys right now. I totally get it; I too enjoy their nod to The Stone Roses. There’s just something about their latest music video that causes my face to wince.

Young The Giant – Home of The Strange – August 12th

Aux Lingua – To You, For You, With You, Without You EP – August 17th

This is an up and coming L.A. band with a killer sound. Stephanie Erin and Bradford Snow take us to a haunting uninhibited place where electronic meets indie.

Cosmonauts – A-OK! – August 19th

Yes, Cosmonauts are technically from Fullerton… but this record is too good not to throw in here. They bring out the best traits of shoegaze.

JUNKJUNK – August 26th

FYF Records put out their 7″ inch Like A Cop last summer. Junk has been shredding all over Los Angeles for a while now. Their debut full length is well done![bandcamp width=100% height=120 album=4103276568 size=large bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5 tracklist=false artwork=small]

Mild High Club – Skiptracing – August 26th

To be honest I couldn’t stand Mild High Club’s first release, Timeline. I wrote it off as another one of those overhyped–stoners with too many chorus pedals–bands. I can’t get behind poorly played, out of tune, instruments hitting sour notes as an aesthetic. The songs on this new album sound much more promising!

Katy Goodman + Greta Morgan – Take It, It’s Yours – August 26th

I’m going to go ahead and declare this band as the best super group of 2016. Katy Goodman (La Sera and Vivian Girls) and Greta Morgan (Springtime Carnivore and The Hush Sound) take their Indie Rock approach to covering punk classics. This would be the only album you needed to throw a hardcore wedding reception. I can’t recommend this record enough, you have to hear this Misfits cover…
