Chego In Chinatown

Roy Choi brings more flavor to the Far East Plaza

Chego Downtown LANext to Wing Hop Fung in the Far East Plaza of Chinatown lies a humble rice bowl restaurant known as Chego. Its claim to fame is its menu by none other than Roy Choi. I’m a fan of Roy Choi. I’ve had the good fortune of running into him several times and I admit it, I’m chef groupie. In addition to undeniable creative culinary genius, the man has a certain charm and charisma. He’s my favorite and I hope he knows it.

So my point being, Chego in Chinatown. I know I’m a little biased but the bias evolved through perfectly sensible reasoning. The food is good. If there ever was a reason to toss your New Year resolution out a loft window, it’s the Chubby Pork Belly bowl at Chego.

Chego Downtown LAIt’s been around since 2010 so it’s no stranger to DTLA foodies but it’s a place I find myself returning to even with all the new and sexy places opening up. This might sound strange but I find their food exhilerating. There’s spice, there’s cold sour creaminess, crunch and crisp and charred meat and pickled garlic and fresh basil. I can’t think of a better way to treat my little taste buds.

Chef Roy accounted for just about every sense. Visually the dishes are confetti-ed in color and strewn with texture. Basically, the bowls deserve modeling contracts and they taste as good as they look. Just take a moment to enjoy the delectable fried egg, glazed pork belly and fresh cilantro. Ooey Gooey Fries are exactly what they sound like, with “sour cream sambal, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, cotija, chillies, cilantro and pickled garlic.” (I had to quote their site.) Though I tend to return to my original loves, there are plenty of other items on the menu like the Beefy T bowl, the Sriracha Bar (chocolate, caramel, Sriracha) and the Kimchi Spam bowl. (Also during the day, Scoops Ice Cream is open next door!)
