March 22 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm$20
Afro-Brazilian singer and songwriter Luiz Melodia was a musician’s musician and revered as one of the most talented Brazilian singer-songwriters. His powerful compositions fluently blended elements from samba, rock, jazz, blues, soul, and reggae, and his soulful and unique voice made him one of the most authentic and captivating artists in performance.
Melodies from Melodia honors the sophistication of Melodia’s musical compositions and arrangements as artists who knew and loved him take the audience through an instrumental journey through Brazilian singer-songwriter’s career. The concert is music-directed by keyboardist Mika Mutti, and features bassist John Leftwich, Artyom Manukyam on cello, Mike Shapiro on percussion, and -straight from Brazil- Melodia’s longtime musical partner, guitarrist Renato Piau.
Throughout his career, Melodia released 16 albums and performed extensively on important stages around the world, including the III Folcalquier Music Festival (France, 1992), at the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland, 2004), and in the Brazilian Summer Sessions at the traditional jazz house Bimhuis in Amsterdam. He sang “Aquele Abraço” at the opening ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. His last studio recording, entitled Zerima, recorded after a 13-year hiatus, won him the MPB Award (Brazilian Popular Music) in the category Best Singer. He remained an active performer until his passing in 2017 from bone marrow cancer.
