It’s always exciting to see a new restaurant pop up in DTLA. The Historic Core’s up and coming hot spot Spread Mediterranean Kitchen is introducing itself to Downtown L.A. as the newest concept in Mediterranean Cuisine. Chef Brandon Weaver is spinning Mediterranean staples like hummus, lamb, falafel and flat bread to create an exciting and tasty modern menu.
First-time owners Dan Coury and Brandon Parker are excited to share their take on Mediterranean cuisine with DTLA. They expressed that it is important to them to serve quality cuisine in a great atmosphere but to do so at an affordable price. Speaking of atmosphere, the restaurant is the embodiment of casual cool with wood accents, hand painted art on one of its walls and modern light fixtures. As for seating, there are numerous tables inside and outside, counters to sit at that face outward so that you can people watch and a bar that seats about 10.
I was lucky enough to have lunch at Spread this past week and was so pleased with the wonderful selection. Lunch at Spread is made easy in a three step formula that gives customers the opportunity to create their own combinations of wraps, rice bowls or salads. Having numerous options makes it easy for Vegetarians or anyone who is looking to refrain from one type of protein or another. The first step in the process of building your meal asks that you choose your “Base.” You can choose from Flat Bread, Basmati Rice, Hummus or Salad. The second step is to choose your “Main.” You can choose from Falafel, Grilled Chicken, Braised Beef, Roasted Mushrooms or Lamb Meatballs. Finally, the third step is to pick your “Style.” Essentially, this step is picking the hummus or spread and toppings that will go on your meal. You can choose from four different options: Traditional, Smooth & Cool, Savory & Red or Cheesey & Spicy. They each have their own unique flavor, texture and toppings. Check out the full menu here.
I decided to order the salad as my “Base”, grilled chicken as my “Main” and Traditional (a mixture of Hummus, Israeli Salad, Pickled Red Onion and Tehina Sauce) as my ‘Style.’ The salad was fresh and the combination of marinated chicken, hummus and pickled onions gave the salad a tasty, one of a kind flavor. I paired the salad with a refreshing hibiscus and pomegranate tea. My friends ordered a salad with lamb and a flat bread wrap with beef. They were both also raving about the scrumptious, unique flavors. I also got a chance to try out their Greek Yogurt. Spread tops off their Greek Yogurt with Lemon Powder and Beet Salt. It may sound odd but the taste is out of this world! It’s creamy and sweet but also a little tart. It’s a must try!
