Let’s face it. Los Angelenos aren’t the friendliest bunch. Paper Tiger Bar.
As a New York City girl, it’s the first thing I noticed when I moved here. People find it strange when you say hello to them. They tend to look at you strangely when you smile at them or you look them in the eye when speaking to them. It’s something I laugh about with my East Coast friends, but truly it makes me kind of sad. Many people here are missing out on the wonderful genuine connections that can be made just by striking up a conversation with someone you don’t already know.
I don’t know if people are just too “Hollywood” or whether it’s true what the studies say; that our cell phones and social media have replaced our natural human instinct to socialize face to face. Trendy new hotspots like the Paper Tiger Bar just might be an answer.
Paper Tiger just opened its doors this month and according to its owner Mark, his vision for the bar is simple yet elegant. Featuring a decor he calls “abandoned Victorian Manor”, he wants Paper Tiger Bar to be a place where everybody knows your name, à la the Cheers theme song (youtube it).
You won’t find a single rude bartender or watered down overpriced drinks here. On the contrary, you’re going to find super friendly staff, awesome music and a chill vibe where you can just relax and hang with your friends.
This 2300 square foot venue was built in the 1920’s and every detail of the design of the Paper Tiger Bar was a labor of love. In the main room is a stunning 16×14 ft Victorian staircase mural painted by Michael Thomas and the winding bar was hand poured by Mark himself. It is equipped with a full kitchen serving up your favorite bar type foods (chicken skewers, fried wings) and things to nosh on, as you listen to the sounds delivered from their custom designed Focal sound system and the musical stylings of its dedicated DJ lounge.
Located just south of Hollywood on Beverly Blvd, Paper Tiger Bar is a hidden gem soon to be the hottest spot in town. You’ll want to step your fashion game way up making sure to adhere to their chic dress code as you sip away on one of their 8 signature cocktails.
You will definitely want to try their J Thaddeus Cucumber Vodka cocktail made with Vodka, Cucumber Lemonade, Mint and Lemon, their Wild Ride Rum cocktail made with Rum, Pineapple Juice and Coconut Water and their signature cocktail the Paper Tiger Vodka made with Vodka, Orange Juice, Soda Water, Orange Zest and Blueberries.
While there are many bars and lounges in Koreatown and DTLA, Paper Tiger has definitely set themselves apart as the perfect place to go to impress a date or get together with friends and yes, even make some new ones.
