Serving Up More Than Tequila at Mas Malo

A Local Favorite that's So Bad It's Good.

Restaurant Row: This is a section of DTLA I pass through often yet don’t visit enough. It’s a part of the city located off 7th Street directly between Olive and Figueroa Avenue. There are a lot of places to pick and choose from here, hence the reason so much can get lost with the overwhelming amount of choices. However, I recently had the opportunity to venture over to the area to get re-acquainted with Màs Malo, the sister to Malo in Silver Lake. It is open every day. Màs Malo has a lot going on, and on almost every day of the week too.

Margarita Monday

Everybody loves a good Margarita special, especially when it happens during the beginning of the week. Every Monday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. patrons get to sip on specialty margaritas available at a discounted price. What better way to wash away those Monday blues than by heading on over to Margaritaville.

Taco Tuesday

Angelenos can never go wrong with Taco Tuesday, especially if you’re lucky enough to find them at a cheap price. Fortunately, Màs Malo offers $2.00 tacos every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Now that’s something to taco ’bout.

DJ & Piano Night

If you miss out on any of the live music featured during the week, fear not; you still have the chance to catch a live set on Saturday and Sunday night from 10:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Every Saturday, Màs Malo has a DJ set that you can experience in the lower level Cantina from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Every Sunday is Piano Night. Piano Night is almost like Jazz night, but more emphasis on the piano.

When it comes to the food at Màs Malo, I was super impressed. Not only is their menu super elaborate, but their portions are plentiful, making it easy to eat family style or order individually. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you’ll be happy to know that there are over 20 dishes for you to choose from. So far, my favorites are the roasted squash, sugar pumpkin flower soft tacos, and the pumpkin enchiladas (all pictured above). Some of their more popular dishes are the vegan Menudo, chicken “carnitas” soft tacos, fish soft Tacos, Baja style shrimp soft tacos, and of course, all of the enchiladas options they have available and more. They’re open during the week for lunch and dinner, and on the weekends for brunch, lunch and dinner. Lunch hours are Monday thru Friday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Brunch on the weekend from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m on both Saturday and Sunday .

Tequila Old Fashioned and The Rooster

Màs Malo’s bars (on all three levels) are stocked with over 300 tequilas and 20 mezcals, which are used in all sorts of margaritas such as the Spicy Cucumber Margarita and The Rooster (a specialty cocktail made with Mezcal). If you’re not well-versed in tequila, there’s a private room available in the back that’s used for tequila tastings called the “Tequila Vault.” It has a very speakeasy feel to it and can comfortably fit between eight to 10 people. Ventilation isn’t the best, so if you reserve it, you’ll want to keep your numbers low. To make reservations for the Tequila Vault Tequila Tasting, you can do so by calling the front of the house (number below). There is a $250 minimum, but the restaurant is very accommodating in regards to working with your needs and budget.

Overall, my experience of getting re-acquainted with Màs Malo was a sensational one. I definitely plan on returning sooner than later, because their weekday deals and events are pretty stellar.  Note to my readers: when you go to Màs Malo, be sure to ask for Jose Cruz. If you don’t know what you want, he’ll help assist you with finding the right dish or cocktail to match your mood, trust. For more information go here.
