The newly branded Los Angeles Football Club is gearing up to usher in a new era for soccer in Southern California.
Currently competing in Major League Soccer for its first season, LAFC is quickly taking the city by storm. An exciting array of players that were brought in, along with a star-studded ownership group, creates the type of hype around the team that LA sport fans live for.
With the new Banc of California Stadium set to be unveiled this Sunday as the Seattle Sounders come to town, the world be be watching.
The following are five reasons you should start following the Los Angeles Football Club today.
A new team with this much hype around it has to have the players to back it up, and LAFC has done just that.
The hallmark signing of Carlos Vela last August set the bar high for the quality of players the team was set to attract. Vela is a star on the Mexican national team, and is bound to bring a drove of Mexico and world soccer fans to each game.
Other notable signings include US national team veteran Benny Feilhaber, Egyptian national team player Omar Gaber, Belgian national team player Laurent Ciman, and 20-year-old Uruguayan rising star Diego Rossi.
It wouldn’t be Los Angeles without some big time names involved.
An ownership group of 30 was put together to ensure the long-term success of the team, with each owner bringing their unique experience in order to make LAFC a well-rounded organization.
Hollywood star Will Ferrell and NBA star Magic Johnson are among the ownership team. Aso involved are US soccer legend Mia Hamm-Garciaparra along with husband Nomar Garciaparra are members of the ownership team looking to make LAFC a powerhouse in the soccer world.
Off to a Great Start
LAFC have quickly adopted a winning mentality. To start their very first season, they have won four of six games, including 5-1 pummeling of Real Salt Lake, and most recently a 5-3 comeback win against the Montreal Impact.
Although the heartbreaking loss to rivals LA Galaxy has been a blemish on this early season, it has kickstarted a rivalry that is sure to heat up over the coming years.
Brand New Stadium
The Banc of California Stadium is the new home of LAFC. Being the first open-air stadium built in Los Angeles in several decades, soccer lovers in the heart of the city have a new cathedral to go enjoy the beautiful game in.
With seats as close as 12 feet from the field, and with all 17,500 season tickets already sold, there is no doubt the stadium will be rocking all season long.
Independent supporter groups are a great way for new fans to get involved with the team and culture surrounding it. There are groups popping up all over the city, with a wide range of activities and viewing parties to keep the hype going.
Most notable of the groups is The 3252. As a non-profit organization, the group aims to cultivate long-term interest in the team and sport through grassroot efforts and in-stadium activities. They are looking to become the best supporter group in the country, and so far they have delivering on their promise.
