The Best Girl Around
It goes without mention that Los Angeles has a deep, rich tradition of celebrating the cinema and it’s stars. After just a couple months of operation, Best Girl at the Ace Hotel has shown to be a perfect representation of what the city’s culture was, is and will be in the future.
Named after the film My Best Girl, which premiered on October 31, 1927 at The Theatre at Ace Hotel; Best Girl opened its doors 90 years later to the day. A joint operation by award-winning Chef Michael Cimarusti and partners Chef Crisi Echiverri and Donato Poto, Best Girl serves a diverse menu aimed at representing the vibrant multiculturalism that has shaped Los Angeles.
Although the decor is the same as the space’s previous restaurant, L.A. Chapter, it’s important to keep in mind that with a new name and menu, comes a new restaurant. Stepping into the space is like going back to the Los Angeles of old. To the days when Hollywood’s elite would be roaming among the very same structure. Black and white tile floors, support columns with a glass facade, golden bronze topped tables, and a quiet, discreet mezzanine level all blend perfectly to tie the restaurant and space it occupies together.
Chef Cimarusti, who is behind famed restaurant Providence, successfully went away of the seafood-based menus he is known for curating. The menu at Best Girl varies slightly throughout the day, with some of the items being available anytime you visit.
The BTU Burger is the best version of a McDonald’s cheeseburger you could possibly imagine. Top-quality ground beef is placed on a fresh potato bun, topped with cheddar cheese, caramelized onion, dill relish and served with a side of fries.
If one of Cimarusti’s seafood creations is what you desire, look no further than the salt spring mussels. Served in a buttery broth with fennel, orange, olives, and placed over a grilled baguette.
If a hearty chunk of meat is more your style, then the grilled duroc pork chop is the way to go. Perfectly cooked through, yet still juicy and succulent, it’s served with turnip, apple, a mustard jus, and bitter greens.
Best Girls signature cocktail is the Lucky Girl. It’s crisp, refreshing, slightly fruity, and just strong enough to let you know there’s liquor in it. In it there’s pisco, lime, grapefruit liqueur, and hibiscus vermouth. Garnished with crisp grapes and a fortune (minus the cookie,) this cocktail is sure to turn your luck around.
What’s Going On Upstairs
Inspired by Les Deux Cafe, a now defunct Hollywood socialite haven, Upstairs is a rooftop beacon overlooking the Downtown Los Angeles skyline at the Ace Hotel. Boasting ample lounge-style seating, a long bar and concrete pool, Upstairs is a mellow hang out spot during the day, and a lively social scene at night.
Though the roof has a pool and lounge chairs for sunbathing, swimming isn’t the main focus here. It’s more likely that you’re there for the impeccable drink menu and daily event lineup, which ranges from yoga in the day, to DJ sets late into the night. Add in stunning city views from every vantage point, and you’ve got an unquestionable classic in the rooftop bar game.
Drink standouts include the LA Sunset, made with tequila, orange juice, lime, vanilla, passionfruit and hibiscus tea. The Scrappy Snack is another good choice, made with pineapple rum, melon, pineapple, lime, coconut or almond milk. For something different during the winter, try the Irish Nipple, made with spiced rum, coffee, amaretto, and Irish cream.
Nothing in the city beats the amazing $1 oyster deal that runs from Monday to Friday between Noon and 5:30 pm. Upstairs differs from other rooftop locations in that it doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. It’s inclusiveness and lack of pretentiousness makes it an ideal place to have worry free fun with friends.
Best Girl and Upstairs are located at the Ace Hotel, 927 S. Broadway in Downtown. Best Girl is open everyday from 7:00 am – 11:00 pm, Fridays until Midnight. Upstairs is open everyday from 11:00 am – 2:00 am.
